Psalm 122 begins with gladness at being invited to Yahweh’s house and then places the speaker inside Jerusalem’s gates. The poem looks at Jerusalem as a gathered city for Israel’s tribes, a place of thanksgiving and judgment, and ends by asking for peace and seeking the city’s good for the sake of people and Yahweh’s house.

A Song of Degrees. Unto thee who dwellest in heaven have I lifted up mine eyes.

Behold, as the eyes of servants [are directed] to the hands of their masters, [and] as the eyes of a maid-servant to the hands of her mistress; so our eyes [are directed] to the Lord our God, until he have mercy upon us.

Have pity upon us, O Lord, have pity upon us: for we are exceedingly filled with contempt.
