Understand
Two days after the joy, the people gather again — this time in sackcloth and ashes. They read the law a quarter of the day, confess a quarter of the day, and then the Levites lead the longest prayer in the Bible's historical books: creation, Abraham, Egypt, the Red Sea, Sinai, manna, the land — and against all of it, the people's repeated rebellion, and God's repeated mercy. It ends where they stand: 'Behold, we are servants this day.'
