Understand
Esther's prayer — the queen lays aside her royal robes, covers her head with ashes, tears her hair, and fasts. Then she speaks to God with shocking honesty: she abhors the sign of her glory on her head, 'as a menstruous rag'; she never ate at Aman's table; since she came to this house she has rejoiced in nothing 'but in thee, O Lord, the God of Abraham.' She asks for one thing: 'a well ordered speech in my mouth in the presence of the lion.'
