Understand
Nehemiah returns from a stay at the Persian court and finds the covenant fraying on every front: Tobiah — the old enemy — has a storeroom inside the temple courts; the Levites have gone home unpaid; merchants are treading wine-presses and selling fish on the Sabbath; men have married women of Ashdod, Ammon, and Moab, and their children speak 'half in the language of Ashdod'; and the high priest's own grandson has married Sanaballat's daughter. Nehemiah cleans house — and prays 'Remember me, O our God, for good.'
