Understand
The confession becomes a contract. The princes, Levites, and priests 'set their seal' to a written covenant — eighty-plus names are listed — and the rest of the people bind themselves under curse and oath. The promises are concrete: no intermarriage with the peoples, no buying on the Sabbath, a yearly third of a didrachm for the temple, wood lots for the altar, firstfruits, firstborn, and tithes — 'we will not forsake the house of our God.'
