Understand
The wall is up; now the city must live. Gates stay shut till sunrise, watches are posted — and God puts it into Nehemiah's heart to find the register of the first returnees. The chapter then prints it: families, towns, priests, Levites, temple servants, and the total — about forty-two thousand three hundred and sixty — with a note on priests who lost their pedigree and were suspended from the priesthood.
