Understand
The counter-decree, in the king's own voice — and this time the truth: Aman 'a Macedonian both in mind and country,' a stranger 'with his cruelty staining our goodness,' who plotted against Mordecai the savior of the king's life and against Esther 'the partner of our kingdom.' The letters in his name are void; he and his family hang on gibbets; 'not we, but God repaying him as he deserved.' The Jews may defend themselves on the appointed day, and the day becomes a feast — 'the almighty God hath turned this day of sadness and mourning into joy.'
