The decree of destruction, in the king's own words — a masterpiece of imperial spin: Artaxerxes presents himself as a clement ruler, Aman as 'second after the king... whom we honour as a father,' and the Jews as a scattered people 'using new laws' who disturb the peace of all nations. Then the counter-text: Mordecai's prayer, denying pride — 'I feared lest I should transfer the honour of my God to a man' — and begging mercy for a people going down to hell in one day.
